QUICK-TRIALS FOR NOVEL CANCER THERAPIES AND PREVENTION: EXPLORATORY GRANTS (R21) (PAR-08-025)

This FOA is intended to promote translational research in new agent/modality development with timely exploitation of new cancer-relevant therapeutic and/or preventive strategies that involve defined molecular targets. Applications are solicited for pilot clinical trials exploring individual anticancer agents/modalities and/or their combinations in the context of specific molecular targets. Applicants may propose Phase 0, Phase I, Phase II, and/or other pilot cancer clinical trials. In addition, patient monitoring and laboratory correlative studies related to clinical trials may be proposed.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA), issued by the NIA, NCI, and NIDDK, is to encourage submission of investigator-initiated research applications on the thyroid in aging. This FOA is intended to promote basic, translational, and clinical studies leading to increased understanding of the physiology of the aging thyroid and improved diagnosis and management of thyroid disease in the elderly.

SHARED INSTRUMENTATION GRANT PROGRAM (S10) (NCRR) (PAR-08-036)

The objective of the program is to make available to institutions expensive research instruments that can only be justified on a shared-use basis and for which meritorious research projects are described. The SIG Program provides a cost-effective mechanism for groups of NIH-supported investigators to obtain commercially-available, technologically sophisticated equipment costing more than $100,000. The maximum award is $500,000. This program is designed to provide for the acquisition or updating of expensive shared-use instrumentation not generally available through other NIH mechanisms, such as the regular research project, program project, or center grant programs. Proposals for research on advancing the design or for the development of new instrumentation will not be considered.

The objective of this initiative is to improve our understanding of venous thrombosis and venous disease. Clinical and translational studies that could improve the current diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, and studies that explore the mechanisms of VTE initiation, progression and recurrence, are needed to advance the field. Among the examples of areas research given are development of better imaging and other diagnostic tools, evaluate current laboratory standards, methods for quantifying venous obstruction of DVT.

NIDA invites applications to support the development of highly translational research centers on the clinical neurobiology of drug abuse and addiction. For this RFA, the concept of a "translational research center on the clinical neurobiology of drug addiction" is an entity with a strong primary human neurobiology focus in which preclinical research directly informs or provides a mechanistic foundation for the clinical research, and the preclinical science may, in turn, be informed and modified by the outcomes of the clinical research. The emphasis of this solicitation is on translation between human and animal experimental investigation; extension of the research aims to the translation to clinical treatment is not required.
COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH IN COMPUTATIONAL NEUROSCIENCE (CRCNS) (NSF/NIH - MULTIPLE ICS) (NSF 08-514)

The computational research supported under this program must have impact on, and relate to biological processes, and optimally generate hypotheses that are testable in biological studies. It is expected that, (1) applications will include collaborations among computational and/or modeling experts, theorists, and experimental neuroscientists; (2) collaborations will involve a dynamic and, possibly, a protracted period of model or theory development and refinement, and intense interaction among scientists and engineers from different disciplines; (3) the development and testing of new models or theories will provide a framework for the design of experiments and the generation of new hypotheses that can help reveal mechanisms underlying normal or disease states of the nervous system, and (4) the development and distribution of professional quality software tools (e.g., modeling algorithms and analytic tools). Two classes of proposals will be considered in response to this solicitation: (1) Research proposals describing new collaborative research projects, and (2) Data sharing proposals to enable sharing of data and other resources.

ACS Nuclear and Radiochemistry Undergraduate Summer Schools

The Division of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology of the American Chemical Society (ACS) is sponsoring two INTENSIVE six-week Summer Schools in Nuclear and Radiochemistry for undergraduates. Funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Energy. The course will consist of both lecture and laboratory work on the fundamentals of nuclear science, radiochemistry, and their applications in related fields. In addition to the formal instruction, the course will include a Guest Lecture Series and tours of nearby research centers at universities and National Laboratories. Students will meet and interact with prominent research scientists from universities and the DOE national labs who are actually working in nuclear and radiochemistry, nuclear medicine, environmental restoration, and related fields.
AAPM 2008 Research Seed Funding Initiative

The AAPM is pleased to announce the creation of a Research Seed Funding Initiative to provide start-up funds for research-oriented medical physicists. Two $25,000, one-year awards will be made in 2008, and are intended to provide funds to develop exciting investigator-initiated concepts, which will hopefully lead to successful longer term project funding from the NIH or equivalent funding sources.
CIP DCIDE PROGRAM
The Cancer Imaging Program of the NCI requests submissions for its Development of Clinical Imaging Drugs and Enhancers (DCIDE) initiative. The goal is the rapid movement of promising, novel cancer imaging enhancers or molecular probes from the laboratory to proof of principle clinical trials. See the web site for details.
GUEST AUTHOR OPPORTUNITIES IN THE NIH MICAD DATABASE
The Molecular Imaging and Contrast Agent Database (MICAD) program has been developed as a key component of the NIH Molecular Imaging Roadmap to provide freely accessible online scientific information on in vivo molecular imaging and contrast agents. To accelerate expansion of the database to include all published agents, the MICAD program has implemented a procedure for members of the imaging community to write and submit entries (chapters) as guest authors to the database. All members of the imaging community are encouraged to consider this guest author opportunities. For further information, please contact the MICAD staff at email@example.com. Individual guest authors will be provide with detailed instructions, style guidelines, and a chapter template. The name of the contributing author(s) will be acknowledged and included in the MICAD online publication.
Rapid Access to Intervention Development (RAID) (NCI) (NOT-CA-08-004)
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is requesting project proposals for access to NCI-sponsored resources provided by the Rapid Access to Intervention Development (RAID) Program. The RAID Program makes available to academic investigators the preclinical development resources managed by the NCI's Developmental Therapeutics Program (DTP). Access to these resources is granted on a competitive basis following the evaluation of submitted project proposals by an external review committee. However, RAID is not a grant program.
