Cancer Research Imaging Camp

An Educational Opportunity for Basic Cancer Researchers

Deadline Extended!!

Dates: June 21-26, 2009

Application Deadline: February 27, 2009

Sponsored by: Cancer Imaging Program, NCI
In partnership with the American Association for Cancer Research

Location: Washington University
St. Louis, Missouri

A Unique Opportunity:

Postdoctoral fellows and early career-level faculty in fields related to basic cancer biology are invited to apply for a special intensive course on in vivo and live cell-imaging techniques. Through lectures and hands-on laboratory sessions, participants will gain experience with a wide range of imaging modalities, including advanced optical imaging, MRI, PET, SPECT, CT, and ultrasound. After this course, participants will be able to select and apply the appropriate in vivo imaging technique necessary to investigate a biological hypothesis and to interpret the resulting imaging data. Attendance is strictly limited to invited participants. See pictures of 2007 Camp

General Information:

The Cancer Research Imaging Camp will be held at Washington University, St. Louis, MO beginning with lunch at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 21, and ending at noon on Friday, June 26, 2009. Participants must attend all sessions. Students who do not complete the entire workshop or who leave before noon on June 26 could jeopardize their institution's ability to send students the following year. Participants will be responsible for their travel to and from St. Louis and for a registration fee of $475.

Participant Eligibility:
The Cancer Research Imaging Camp workshop is designed for postdoctoral fellows and early career-level faculty in fields related to basic cancer biology.

Participant Selection:
Participants will be selected by the Workshop Selection Committee. Preference will be shown to investigators demonstrating a commitment to the integration of in vivo or live cell imaging into their research. The Selection Committee seeks to assemble a group of students from diverse academic and research institutions who work in a variety of cancer research areas. Women and persons from groups considered by the National Cancer Institute to be underrepresented in cancer research are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to investigators working in the United States and Canada. All selected participants will be expected to present a 5 min. synopsis of their current research at the Camp.

Accommodations:
Room and board in St. Louis will be provided by the NCI at no additional cost to the participant. Participants will not have an abundance of free time, and we therefore strongly discourage the attendance of spouses and other guests.

How to Apply:
No paper requests will be accepted, and only complete online requests will be considered. The complete request must include:

  • A one-page description of your current in vivo or live cell imaging experience.
  • A one-page description of your general area of cancer research and how you plan to integrate in vivo or live cell imaging into that research.
  • NIH biosketch--format can be found at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/424/SF424R-R_biosketch.doc .
  • Letter of Recommendation--You must submit a letter from your Program Supervisor, Department Head, or Cancer Center Director in support of your application for this workshop. This letter should describe the quality of your experimental work and the impact that advanced in vivo imaging techniques could have on its progress.

Deadline:Submit the completed application form no later than February 27, 2009. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance by March 27.
